Earl is too close to eorl.
How about:

Drighten

Clan Chieftain/Chieftess
Tribal King/Queen
Eorl
MILITARY RANKS
Warrior
Thane
Ten-Thane
Hundred-Thane

Re: Changing names of things
Jarl sounds very Norse to me, while Thegn, Drighten and Eorl are all Anglo-Saxon in origin even if lining them up in a hierarchical pecking order of rank with Baron, Lord Chieftain and King is not.

I agree, but since we are in a fantasy world we do not need to conform to real linguistic conformity.grumbold99 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 4:39 pm Jarl sounds very Norse to me, while Thegn, Drighten and Eorl are all Anglo-Saxon in origin even if lining them up in a hierarchical pecking order of rank with Baron, Lord Chieftain and King is not.
Re: Changing names of things
Agree with Grumbold on origins and Eric with that it is whatever feels right for a rune quest background.
Baron is generally a more middling noble rank - above knight but below earl/eorl/jarl. Therefore feels a bit wrong to me for the first rank of nobility to be baron - but happy togo with whatever people want. If the word "knight" feels wrong you could go with the german ritter or perhaps better, the swedish (I believe) riddare (maybe adla?).
But happy to go with whatever feels right to others.
