I wonder..........

They were questions he'd often asked himself, "Am I destined for anything better than being a bog cleaner? Can I break the endless cycle of Dungshuvlers who've spent their entire lives slaving away, for a few paltry lunars, digging and filling communal latrine pits for the wealthy and socially superior? Surely there must be the chance for one of us to rise above the 'norm', to excel amongst the population of Boldhome.

Recently the 'signs' were pointing towards just that!! He'd been appointed as an Aide to a Balmyr Baron, given the post of Lieutenant Warlord of one of the King's regiments within the Army, amassed himself a heap of loot, become an Orlanth Initiate AND had Battle Songs sung about him with the prospect of receiving a title from the King himself!! That prospect, in fact, looked extremely promising as he'd received a fancy letter with a Royal Seal upon it only a few days ago but was holding back from opening it.......from sneaking a look at the contents......until the time felt right, but there was something about the letter that gave him hope that it contained good news, great news even, and.....for the first time ever.....a Dungshuvler just might be awarded a title, that Dungshuvler being him......Baron Torben had a certain 'ring' about it!

The only slight drawback, of course, was his upbringing and how on earth did one conduct oneself at Court, all those airs and graces, the fancy clothes, articulate conversation etc.....shudder.....all he knew about was how to deal with turds, keep things tidy and not too stinky......yes, there were the few bits of military tactics stuff he'd picked up over recent seasons but there wasn't enough to sustain a proper chat with, gosh this was going to be tricky! Oh well, one could worry about that when the time arose but until then forge ahead, grasp the moment and all that PLUS he had read that if one is appointed as a Baron then that qualifies a person to make a play for the position of Deputy of Public Harmony, a most prestigious post and one that brings with it the chance to rid the City of certain traitorous individuals, dirty rotten scoundrels who threaten the safety of King and City. Yes, that was a role he could competently fill, after all he'd already been a Ferret for a short while, bit of experience under the belt, so to speak, and he was certainly aware of one rogue that needed investigating".

A faint smile crossed the lips of young Torben as he took out his quill and grabbed a nearby scroll, quickly scribbling the heading 'List of Traitors' at the top of it. Marking up a Number 1 under the heading Torben pondered........ now how many R's are there in that individuals name again.........

My congratulations and best wishes for you, Lt. Warlord Torben, as you gain recognition for honorable deeds and rise in Sartar society. Boldhome is a place where any person can work hard and reap just rewards for their efforts, as you have done. May the King look on you kindly as he considers awarding titles to brave soldiers from the Fire Period campaigns. May Orlanth continue to take note of you and allow you to grow in stature within the Great Temple in Boldhome.
